Michael appeared on ABC News in Brisbane tonight to discuss the ways he feels the Australian government is letting down their soldiers: Well-known war correspondent Michael Ware says Australian troops are "fighting, bleeding, sweating and dying" in a vacuum of silence in Afghanistan. Ware accuses the Australian Government of not informing the public about the broader nature of the Afghan war.

Earlier this month, the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney hosted a two-day summit titled The 9/11 Decade: How Everything Changed. During the first session, Michael asked a question of the panelists. (Sadly, the cameras were not set up to capture the audience.)

Michael specifically directed the question to Dennis Richardson (the former head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, on the left) who sidestepped it completely, leaving it to US Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich to address.

BARACK Obama and his agency chiefs could not have scripted the killing of Osama bin Laden better if they had tried.

In a daring, breathtaking and clinically lethal operation they cut him down right where he lived.

The raid makes the passing of a long, bloody decade of war since 9/11. It comes as the great price of treasure and blood - around 6000 US combat deaths and hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths - continues to be paid.

But in August last year US intelligence finally unearthed the lead they had been so desperately seeking. It allowed them to track and hunt down the masterfully elusive al-Qa'ida leader in a plush Pakistani mansion.

Two journalists close to the story of the hunt for Osama bin Laden are Michael Ware and Nick Bryant.
Former CNN and Time journalist Ware is the only Westerner kidnapped by Al Qaeda to be released alive. The Brisbane-born reporter spent several years in Afghanistan and Iraq.
BBC journalist Bryant was the broadcaster's Washington correspondent during the 9/11 attacks. He was embedded with US troops in Afghanistan in 2003 and also spent time in Pakistan.
Here they share their thoughts about bin Laden's death and the nearly decade-long manhunt for the Al Qaeda leader.

Restoring some edited Cafferty

Back in April 2007, Jack Cafferty gave one of his glowing commentaries on Michael’s work during The Situation Room. Unfortunately, he mentioned Michael’s son ... at a time when Michael was doing his level best to keep anyone from learning of young Jack’s existence, for security reasons. At the time, I edited the comments out, but I did keep the clip. I have restored it to the bottom of the page from that day’s report, so you can now view it here.

Australian Story honored

Last night in Las Vegas, the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards were presented during the NAB convention, and the Australian Story program about Michael received two awards -- a Gold World Medal in the Biography/Profile category and a Silver World Medal in the Magazine Format category. Congratulations to producers Claire Forster and Renata Gombac for capturing Michael’s gut-wrenching story in such an open and honest way -- even those of us who have followed his career closely were stunned by some of the revelations presented in the program.

Frontline witness to brutality

NEVER-BEFORE seen footage from the hands of al-Qaeda insurgents will bring the brutal truth of war to the big screen in a cinema film being produced by Brisbane journalist Michael Ware.

Ware, who spent his childhood days in Caloundra, is somewhat of a celebrity in the US after almost 10 years abroad bringing the reality of the Afghan and Iraq wars to the western world.

Kings Beach, where his family holidayed regularly, is a stark comparison to the life Ware went on to live.

As a Time magazine reporter and then with news organisation CNN, Ware reported from both within the US Army and as a man living among the insurgents.

His experiences, including being kidnapped and held at gunpoint, were gut-wrenching.

Big, big thanks to Nicole for letting me know that QUT has posted the video of the talk Michael gave there earlier this month. The clip is embedded on this page, and a larger version can be accessed via this link. (The video freezes partway through, but the audio continues through the end of the talk; unfortunately they cut the Q&A section. Hopefully they can fix the glitch, and hopefully they got the Q&As on tape and can include those!) The video has no controls, so no chance I can create a transcript for this one.

[I’ve reconverted the clip as .mp4 and .m4v formats -- one worked for me on a PC and the other on a Mac.]

Michael has confirmed to me that he has left CNN, although he is not yet ready to disclose discussions about plans for his return to US television.

That said, he has other projects cooking as well. He is currently working very hard on something that I am confident everyone will agree will have been worth the wait. (This is not the book; that is still percolating. This is something new and very, very exciting.)

Michael on Nine News re Brisbane flood (?)

A law professor at QUT tweeted yesterday that Michael was interviewed on Nine News, although he gave no details. It would have been around 10am there and at the time Nine was doing live coverage of the flooding in Brisbane, so I would assume that’s what he was talking about. They have not posted the clip online. Hopefully he was just walking about and checking on things and he and his family are safe and dry...
